Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston has maintained that the department stands by its initial determination of no foul play, stating that earlier evidence “didn’t suggest anything.” However, attorney Ben Crump has contradicted this view, saying, “This was not a natural killing. This was not a natural death. This represents a young man who was killed.”

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office performed the autopsy, and although the cause and manner of death were ruled as undetermined, the nature of the injuries has raised suspicions. The report also mentions that the condition of the remains at the time of the autopsy made it difficult to determine the exact timing of the injuries, and animal activity on the remains further complicated the investigation.

As the investigation by the Smith County Sheriff’s Department is still pending, the agency could not provide further comment or details regarding Carter’s death and disappearance.

While the FBI did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on Tuesday, an FBI spokesperson informed NBC News that the agency is not currently involved in the case.
